Everything behind the numbers — the varietal, the estate, the milling, and how to taste it.
Finca las Manillas has been producing oil since 1878. Four generations of the same family on an olive estate at the foot of Sierra Morena, between the sierras of Andujar and Despeñaperros, in the Condado de Jaen region. They only produce oil from their own harvest: what comes from their olive trees is what they bottle.
The estate has two zones: the centuries-old plantation high in the mountains and the younger trees on the hills below. The Limited Edition is made only from the best lots of the harvest -- the first olives, the trees that have borne the finest fruit that year. It is harvested in October, when the olives are at their peak. The owners joke: 'Noviembre, the oil that is harvested in October.'
Finca las Manillas has won the Jaen Seleccion on one occasion, along with numerous other awards. The Limited Edition is the oil that explains those prizes: mountain Picual, from centuries-old trees, selected from the very best of each campaign. A Picual that makes no apologies.
