About this oil

This oil, in full

Everything behind the numbers — the varietal, the estate, the milling, and how to taste it.

Puerta de las Villas is the brand of the San Vicente de Mogón cooperative, founded in 1966 by a hundred farmers. Today they are more than 1,300 agricultural professionals. Their olive groves are in the Sierra de las Villas, within the Sierra de Cazorla Natural Park — a Biosphere Reserve — between the Aguascebas and Guadalquivir rivers. The microclimate of that area gives the oil a character you cannot replicate.

Early harvest Picual, picked when the olive is still green. Immediate milling. Cold extraction. The protected ecosystem of the Biosphere Reserve is not a decorative detail: it is the environment that defines the oil's profile. Altitude, rivers, Mediterranean forest — everything plays a role.

The Evooleum guide — which evaluates 800 EVOOs from around the world — chose Puerta de las Villas as the best Picual in the world in 2022. Not the best in Jaén. Not the best in Spain. In the world. With 95 points out of 100. And it was not the only award: within 20 days they also won the Mario Solinas from the International Olive Council and Jaén Selección. This is the Picual that proves cooperatives can produce elite oil.

This Picual comes from the Sierra de las Villas, within the Cazorla Biosphere Reserve, and has a character that cannot be reproduced outside that area. The intense aroma of leaf and green almond with aromatic herbs and spices prepares you for what comes on the palate: an oil with presence, where bitterness and pungency are balanced masterfully, leaving that fresh sensation reminiscent of eucalyptus. This is the oil of more than 1,300 agricultural professionals united in a cooperative since 1966.

Is it true it was the best Picual in the world?
Yes. The Evooleum guide, out of 800 oils evaluated worldwide, named it the best Picual in 2022 with a score of 95/100. It also won the Mario Solinas award from the International Olive Council and Jaén Selección.
Where does it come from exactly?
From the Sierra de las Villas, within the Sierra de Cazorla Natural Park (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve), between the Aguascebas and Guadalquivir rivers. Mogón, Jaén.
Is it a large cooperative?
Yes — over 1,300 farmers, founded in 1966. But size does not compromise quality. The awards prove it.
What does it taste like?
Green leaf, green almond, tomato plant, green wood, aromatic herbs, spices. Balanced bitterness and pungency. A menthol-like fresh sensation on the palate. Aftertaste of green nuts.
What is the difference with the organic version?
The Temprano is conventional production with sustainable practices. The Ecológico has official organic certification. Both are early harvest, same cooperative, same terroir, but with slightly different sensory profiles.
